Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) promoted the Democratic National Convention by endorsing the liquor Malort as the “unofficial shot” of the event, which is being held in Chicago this year.

The alcoholic beverage is commonly associated with Chicago, which was introduced to the Illinois city in the 1920s and has ramped up in demand in recent years . Ahead of the DNC, which is set to begin on Monday, Pritzker gave his endorsement of Malort on X, reposting an interview he did with MSNBC host Jen Psaki .

“You come to Chicago, every Chicagoan knows you gotta have a shot of Malort,” Pritzker said in the clip on Inside with Jen Psaki. “This is a liquor that Chicagoans take. I’m not saying it’s the best-tasting liquor; I’m just saying that it’s the one that if you want to prove your mettle, you gotta have a shot of Malort.”

Pritzker and Psaki are then seen taking their own shot of Malort, with Psaki describing the drink as having “an after-effect.”

This year’s DNC saw a shake-up last month after President Joe Biden bowed out of his reelection bid, with Vice President Kamala Harris receiving his endorsement instead. Despite not staying in the 2024 presidential race against former President Donald Trump , he will still serve as one of the DNC’s speakers , with him and first lady Dr. Jill Biden set to speak on Monday.

Other speakers who will be featured include former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, and Harris’s vice presidential candidate Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN). Harris will accept the party’s nomination on Thursday night.

The DNC is expected to receive thousands of protesters this year , with protest organizers expecting between 30,000 and 40,000 to join the March on the DNC 2024. The protesters are expected to advocate for a variety of topics relevant to the 2024 election, including abortion access and opposition to the United States’s support for Israel amid the conflict in Gaza .
