GOP veterans to Walz: ‘You have violated the trust of our brothers and sisters in arms’

CHICAGO — In a fiery and furious open letter to Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), four Republican veterans in the Senate and dozens in the House of Representatives excoriated the Democratic vice presidential nominee for repeatedly misrepresenting his service in the National Guard.

"Repeatedly claiming to be a 'Retired Command Sergeant Major' when you did not complete the requirements was not honorable," said the letter, which was organized by the presidential campaign of former President Donald Trump. "Nor was it honorable to claim to carry weapons 'in war' when you had not served in war, and abandoning the men and women under your leadership just as they were getting ready to deploy was certainly not honorable either."

Composed under the tutelage of Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL), the chairman of Veterans and Military Families for Trump, the letter coincides with the Democratic National Convention's third day, when Walz is scheduled to accept the party's nomination to serve as Vice President Kamala Harris's running mate. But the letter warns that "until you admit you lied to them, there is no way you can be trusted to serve as Vice President."

At the GOP nominee's riverfront Trump hotel across the Windy City from the DNC, the former president's campaign has hosted daily press conferences countering the incumbent administration's programming. Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL), a Bronze Star veteran of the war in Afghanistan, headlined Wednesday's press conference to lambaste specifically President Joe Biden and the presidential nominee for their disastrous withdrawal from the nation that has since been taken over by the Taliban.

"Over 150,000 of our allies left behind, and at the current rate that they're still doddering along and trying to get them out, it'll take 12 years to get our people out, and the Taliban are hunting them down right now as we speak, torturing, arresting, kidnapping," Waltz said. "There are three Americans hostage right now in Afghanistan held by the Taliban at the same time Biden and Harris provide billions of dollars in aid."

Even though Harris has fared better in polls against Trump than Biden did before being forced out of his reelection, a YouGov poll last month found that Trump still has a 12-point lead over Harris on foreign policy.

"Donald Trump left the Middle East better off than he found it. He was the first president in modern history for that to happen," Waltz said. "ISIS largely defeated and contained. Iran broke, couldn't pay their terrorist proxies, according to the terrorist proxies. Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis complaining that they're running out of cash because it had all dried up coming out of Tehran. And literally Nobel Peace Prize-worthy peace accords being signed on the White House lawn between Arab nations and Israel that only a generation ago were invading Israel, all under Donald J. Trump's watch. And all now literally on fire as we speak."
