Do Democrats know they are in power right now?

The most bizarre part of the Democratic National Convention is that Democrats are trying to get everyone to forget that they are the party in power and have been for the last four years.

Democrats have spent their convention lamenting the state of the country, the political divisions, and the fact that people are struggling with inflation. Vice President Kamala Harris said the first thing she would do in office would be to lower grocery prices despite the fact that she is in office right now and for the last four years could walk down the hall to give her master plan to President Joe Biden .

Journalists keep talking about how Harris wants to chart a new course from the one the administration she is part of has taken the country, or how Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) is so “normal” compared to the last four years of Biden and Harris. The dissonance between reality and campaigning has become so outrageous that Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said she doesn’t “believe” the revised-down job numbers because she “never heard Donald Trump say anything truthful” when the numbers come from the Bureau of Labor, courtesy of the Biden administration, of which she is a part.

This is part of the obvious attempted rebranding of Harris as someone separate from the Biden administration. Biden was unpopular due to his age, yes, but also because his administration botched several issues, from inflation to the border crisis to the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan. Harris was a key part of all of that: She was the tiebreaking vote on the Inflation Reduction Act that made inflation worse, the person Biden put in charge of the border crisis, and the “last person in the room” with Biden when discussing the Afghanistan withdrawal.

Democrats would have you believe that Harris was a helpless bystander in Biden’s administration or even that Biden and Harris aren’t the ones who were stewarding the country for the past four years. Democrats have controlled the White House for 12 of the last 16 years and held the Senate for the past four years. Unless all the blame is going to be placed on the slim House GOP majority that has only controlled the chamber for the last two years, the only thing Harris could be charting a new course from is the exact same Democratic Party that nominated her in the first place.
