    Gas prices: Another day of decreases at the pumps to end the work week

    Gas prices dropped again throughout the country as the average price for a gallon of regular gas decreased to $3.374, according to AAA . Friday’s price was a decrease from Thursday when a gallon of regular gas cost $3.387. Friday’s drop also meant that the price of regular gas dropped every day this week.

    Gas prices remain a vital topic heading into the 2024 presidential election . With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris , now the Democratic presidential nominee, will have to indicate how she will address the country’s high gas prices and energy costs and how both affect the economy and people’s finances.

    While prices have fluctuated in 2024, they have decreased in recent weeks and months. Nevertheless, gas prices remain significantly higher than when former President Donald Trump was in office.

But first, we will start with gas prices in Illinois, where the Democratic National Convention was held this week.

    Illinois

    The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Illinois on Friday is $3.717. This is not the most expensive gas price in the nation for a state, but it is among the highest in the country. Friday’s price was a decrease from Thursday when gas cost $3.737 per gallon. This was also a drop from last week when a gallon of regular gas in Illinois was $3.83.

    Washington, D.C.

    Gas prices dropped in Washington, D.C. , on Friday, with a gallon of regular gas now costing residents $3.631. This is higher than the national average. On Thursday, gas prices were slightly more expensive, coming in at $3.643. A week ago, a gallon of regular gas was $3.667. The aforementioned prices are also cheaper than what a gallon of regular gas cost a month ago when it was $3.722.

    Delaware

    Gas prices are also down in Delaware on Friday, with the average price for a gallon of regular gas dropping to $3.214, a decrease from Thursday’s price of $3.24. Gas prices in the First State are also lower than a week ago when residents paid $3.303 per gallon for regular gas. Prices are also cheaper than a month ago when regular gas was $3.401 per gallon in the First State.

    Maryland

    On Friday, the average price for a gallon of regular gas is $3.303 in Maryland . This was a drop from Thursday, when it cost $3.329 per gallon. A week ago, regular gas was $3.386 per gallon in the state. The decreases continue a trend that started about a month ago when gas in Maryland was much higher, costing residents $3.485 for a gallon of regular gas.

    Virginia

    Virginia has the second lowest prices for regular gas in the region on Friday, coming in at $3.249 per gallon. This was a decrease from Thursday when it cost $3.263. A week ago, the price for a gallon of regular gas in Virginia was $3.31 and a month ago, it was $3.411.

    Hawaii

    Hawaii is the state with the most expensive gas prices in the country. The average price for a gallon of regular gas is $4.657 on Friday. This was a slight increase from Thursday's price of $4.65 per gallon. A week ago, a gallon of regular gas in the Aloha State cost $4.667. This was roughly the same cost for a gallon of regular gas from a month ago, when gas was ever-so-slightly more expensive, coming in at $4.675.

    Mississippi

    Mississippi remains the state with the least expensive gas in the country. The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Mississippi on Friday is $2.921. This slightly decreased from Thursday's price of $2.93 per gallon. Mississippi is one of three other states with gas prices under $3 per gallon, the other two being Tennessee and Oklahoma. This is a new development in Oklahoma and Tennessee, but prices under $3 a gallon have been a consistent trend in the state, as far back as a month ago when the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $2.985.
