Former President Donald Trump recruited Virginia Senate candidate Hung Cao for a campaign pit stop at a Vietnamese restaurant.

During a day packed with events, including a visit to Arlington National Cemetary and a National Guard event, Trump found time to stop by Truong Tien Vietnamese Restaurant in Falls Church to speak. During his appearance, he sang praises for both Cao and the Vietnamese community.

"You know, somehow, I don't know what it is, you'll like to explain it, but the Vietnamese community loves me, and I love them!" Trump said, remarks that were greeted with cheers and applause from restaurantgoers.

Trump then complemented the attire of the Vietnamese community, saying they were the "most beautiful dressers I've ever seen."

He also laid high praise on Cao, who is taking on Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) in November.

"This is a great gentleman. I love his name, Hung Cao. I love that name, and that name alone should get you elected," Trump said. "More importantly, actually, he's tremendous. He's tremendous. He ran a great primary campaign. I endorsed him very early, and he did very well. And we think he's got a very good chance of winning for the Senate. And I really believe it. I hope your community gets out and really supports him like 100% because you can win, you can win, definitely win."

Cao delivered a few remarks in Vietnamese and then announced that if elected, he would be the first Vietnamese American senator, in time for the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon.

"Make America Great Again!" one restaurant goer shouted in a thick Vietnamese accident, drawing a smile and laugh from Trump.

At another point, Trump drew a contrast between the alleged laziness of President Joe Biden and the hard-working nature of the Vietnamese community.

“We are the closest to World War III we’ve ever been. And we have a man who just took a vacation in California and he came back today," he said. "Where’s he going? Delaware — another vacation, he's going another week. That’s not the Vietnamese — they’re hard-working people.”

The former president then signed autographs and spoke with patrons.

Cao came to the United States as a refugee after the fall of Saigon in 1975, going on to serve in the military. He won the Republican primary after an early endorsement from Trump.

In the Virginia Senate competition, Kaine leads by a significant margin.
