Former first lady Melania Trump celebrated her 28th anniversary of immigrating to the United States and praised New York City as a place that “captivated my heart.”

Trump, who was born in Slovenia, moved to New York City in 1996 and became a U.S. citizen in 2006.

“New York City captivated my heart the moment I arrived 28 years ago today,” Trump wrote on X Tuesday. “This electrifying town isn't just my home; it's a colorful canvas where dreams come alive. New York’s iconic skyline and vibrant culture inspire me every day.”

The former first lady also detailed her first impression of the U.S. during a speech last year , during which she stated she knew “immediately” upon arrival that she wanted to make the country “my permanent home.”

When her husband, former President Donald Trump, became president in 2017, Melania Trump became the only wife of a president to become a naturalized U.S. citizen . Additionally, she is only the second first lady to be born outside of the U.S., with the first being former President John Quincy Adams’s wife, Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams , who was born in London, England.

Earlier this year, Melania Trump announced she would be releasing her first memoir this fall , which will include “stories and images never before shared with the public.” The book, simply titled Melania, is scheduled to be released ahead of Election Day this year.

The former first lady has been mostly absent from joining her husband along the 2024 campaign trail this year, though she did make an appearance at the Republican National Convention last month. In the wake of the assassination attempt on the former president in mid-July, she stated the lives of herself and her son, Barron, were " on the brink of devastating change ."
