Kemp focused on winning after ‘small distraction’ Trump attacks

Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) has his sights set on helping Republicans win in the Peach State, calling past squabbles from former President Donald Trump aimed at him a "small distraction."

Trump has had a testy relationship with Kemp since the former president lost Georgia in the 2020 election, and the governor refused to help him overturn the result. The feud has largely been one-sided as Trump has switched between throwing attacks and playing nice with Kemp.

Trump recently made nice with Kemp again, posting on social media that he is thankful for "all of your help and support in Georgia" and said he was looking forward to working with Kemp. The change of tune came weeks after Trump had called the governor "little Brian Kemp" and said he was "disloyal." Kemp told Fox News he was unsure where the motivation for Trump to say that came from, but dismissed it as a "small distraction."

"I’m not sure exactly what happened going into the rally. I’ve seen a lot of different stories and people’s explanations of what happened," Kemp told the outlet. "To me, that was a small distraction that’s in the past."

When asked about Trump's change of heart last week, Kemp said he had not talked to Trump since the post went up and that only Trump could answer for the post.

"You have to ask him those questions. I’ve been consistent for really the last couple of years that I was going to support the ticket, whoever our nominee was, in Georgia. That’s exactly what I’m doing, what I have been doing," Kemp told Fox News.

"I’ve talked to a lot of other folks, and I think everybody has a good understanding of where everybody is and understands my position has not changed," Kemp added. "I have been supporting him and the whole ticket in Georgia , and I'm still doing that and will continue to do that through November."

The Georgia governor emphasized to the outlet that he is focused on the GOP winning back the Peach State in November, after Democrats flipped the state in the 2020 presidential election.

"We need to be telling people why they should vote for us, what we’re going to do to make things better than they are right now. And there’s a host of issues that I think you could contrast Kamala Harris and her record," Kemp told the outlet.

The governor has supported Trump after the former president won the GOP primary earlier this year, and a report from ABC News claims that Kemp will co-host a fundraiser for Trump's campaign in the Peach State on Thursday.

Despite Georgia's blue results in recent years, Kemp has remained popular and easily won reelection to the governorship in 2022.
