Kemp hints at joining Trump on campaign trail as party unites in face of Harris threat

Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) hinted he might join former President Donald Trump on the campaign trail as the Harris-Walz campaign boosts its staff in Georgia .

Kemp spoke about the state of the race in Georgia in an appearance on Fox News's Fox and Friends. When asked if there may be a joint campaign appearance with the former president, he said they will see what happens.

"Well, we'll see how that plays out. I know they got a busy schedule," Kemp replied. "We're going to continue to work hard for the whole ticket here in Georgia. We gotta win. We gotta win. That's the bottom line."

Trump and Kemp have experienced a renewal of the rift between them in recent weeks, with each hitting the other in public statements, both subtly and not so subtly. However, the feud appears to have been quashed, with Kemp saying it is in the past — though throwing one last jab by implying the fault was with Trump's camp.

"Well, look, there was a little distraction, obviously, on their side when it came to Georgia," he said. "But to me, that's in the past. I have been saying that, guys, literally for over a year now, that I was going to support our nominee. That we had to win Georgia. The road to the White House runs through Georgia. And I still believe today we cannot afford four more years of Kamala Harris and Joe Biden. It's not about me. And as former President Trump says a lot, it's not about him. It's about our country."

He contrasted the foreign policy of the Trump and Biden administrations and praised former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Kemp is reportedly scheduled to appear at a fundraiser for Trump on Thursday, according to the Hill. He will be at the Atlanta event alongside his wife, Marty Kemp, and Pompeo.

The feud began years ago when Kemp refused to endorse the idea that Trump won Georgia in 2020, but it reignited this month when Trump bashed Kemp over a series of slights, including comments from the governor's wife that she wouldn't vote for Trump.

Kemp responded with criticisms of his own, leading to panic among many Republicans. The pair's dislike for each other seems to be well-known by senators. Top-level operatives, including Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), worked to push through a truce between the two.

Graham targeted Trump in his comment, urging him to move beyond this rift.

"Mr. President, this is your election to lose. It’s important you win to reset a broken border and get the world in good order,” Graham said on Fox News. “Let’s win this election. How about that?"

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) also told NBC that he spoke with Kemp last week to mend the rift.

“We’re each trying to talk to different people in different ways, and we’re each trying to try to run the race as best we can,” Vance said.

Only hours after Vance spoke with Kemp, the Georgia governor appeared on Fox News to show his support for the Republican presidential ticket.

The Harris campaign has doubled down on Georgia in recent weeks, hiring 400,000 volunteers and 174 staffers and opening 24 campaign offices. Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) are embarking on a bus tour across the state to rally support.

The Cook Political Report rated Georgia as a "toss-up" for the presidential election in August, revising its July rating of "lean Republican."

Harris is polling at 46%, according to a New York Times/Siena College poll released on Aug. 17, which is a significant narrowing of Trump's lead.
