Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) is winning the running mate favorability war, according to a new ABC News/Ipsos poll .

Walz has a 42% favorability rating in the survey, against 31% who view him unfavorably. That's a much better number than his Republican counterpart, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), who has a 32% favorability rating against 44% who view him unfavorably.

Both vice presidential candidates have seen their share of controversy in just a few weeks of campaigning. For Vance, resurfaced comments he made about "childless cat ladies " running the Democratic Party have dogged him since he became part of the GOP ticket in July.

Walz has faced accusations of stolen valor for exaggerating his military record, and similar controversies about embellishing other aspects of his past, including how he got his start in politics .

But the Vance issues seem to have more purchase with the public so far, who view him much less favorably than Walz.

Roughly half of respondents felt that Walz, a two-term governor, would be qualified to take over as president if needed, while 57% were not convinced of the same for Vance, who has served in the Senate for less than two years.

Walz and Vance will square off on Oct. 1 during the vice presidential debate, which will air on CBS.
