Rep. Bob Good (R-VA) will leave his role as chairman of the House Freedom Caucus this week.

The House Freedom Caucus plans to have a new leader by Friday, according to the Hill. Good’s exit is prompted by Republican John McGuire’s successful challenge to the Republican nomination for Good’s seat.

“Upon my recount being completed on August 2, I had told the board that I was submitting my resignation as chair, effective when the board decided to act upon it,” Good said earlier this month.

During the Republican presidential primary, Good backed Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) over former President Donald Trump. McGuire had the backing of the former president in the Virginia primary.

His tenure as chairman was supposed to last through December 2025. Good said he would help the caucus choose a new chair for the group.

Reps. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) and Scott Perry (R-PA) are seen as likely replacements, with Biggs as the more likely of the two, according to Politico.

McGuire will face Democratic nominee Gloria Witt in Virginia’s right-leaning 5th Congressional District.
