Forget the ducks: Biden’s border crisis is overwhelming communities

Put aside the fantastical claims that Haitian immigrants are killing and eating cats and ducks in Ohio , and you can see that there is a real, undeniable problem: Communities are being overrun by the border crisis.

Former President Donald Trump repeated the claim that Haitian immigrants were killing and eating animals in Springfield, Ohio, during the debate on Tuesday because Trump can never make a good point when there is a good point to be made. Putting that aside, there is a real problem involving the surge of Haitian immigrants in Springfield, a city of 59,000 that has absorbed 15,000 Haitians since 2020.

President Joe Biden has kept in place deportation protections for up to 309,000 Haitian illegal immigrants, pushing their temporary status protections all the way to February 2026. As part of this program, Springfield has been overwhelmed, with Gov. Mike DeWine (R-OH) suing to stop the Biden administration from being able to offload “an unlimited number of migrants to Ohio communities.” DeWine is putting aside $2.5 million over the next two years to deal with healthcare costs alone and sending Ohio State Highway Patrol to deal with, as the Associated Press said , “traffic issues that officials say have cropped up due to an increase in Haitians unfamiliar with U.S. traffic laws using the roads.”

Costs and safety are the two big issues at play. Springfield City Schools had to hire translators for Haitian children who don’t speak English, leading to 10 times more spending on translation services alone. In 2023, a Haitian immigrant crashed into a school bus, killing one child and sending 26 more to the hospital on the first day of school. While he was a legal immigrant, he had no U.S. driver’s license, and now, Ohio is dealing with who knows how many more deportation-protected Haitian immigrants who are “using the roads” and are “unfamiliar with U.S. traffic laws.”

This mirrors the problems in many places throughout the country, whether it be Ohio, New York City, Chicago, or small border towns in Texas and Arizona. Biden and the Democratic Party refuse to deport illegal immigrants or even keep them out of the country in the first place, leaving communities like Springfield to fend for themselves. That is the real story here, not whether a few Haitian immigrants are biting the heads off ducks.
