Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) denied that his criticisms of the Federal Emergency Management Agency for mismanaging Hurricanes Helene and Milton were misinformed.

More than 200 people are dead, and more than 2,000 are reported missing since Helene touched ground in Florida last month followed by Milton, a Category 3 storm, hitting the state. Meanwhile, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said FEMA will not have the funds to last through hurricane season, which usually ends on Nov. 30. The Biden administration has classified any criticisms about this spending as "misinformation."

"Secretary Mayorkas himself said that they were out of money, said that they were transferring funds to help illegal immigrants' resettlement," Steube said on Fox News's Fox & Friends First. "The White House spokesperson was saying that a year or so ago they were transferring funds to do that. It’s really frustrating when suddenly facts come out and they don’t like the narrative, they label it misinformation. And they try to characterize things that Republicans are saying that are fact are not fact when, in fact, they care more about illegal immigrants in this country than they do American citizens that have been hit by a natural disaster."

FEMA has roughly $20 million in disaster funding and allocated $640 million this year toward its Shelter and Services Program, which helps migrants find food and housing and is separate from disaster preparedness funding. Congress funded the Shelter and Services Program after voting it into effect last year. Meanwhile, Congress did not opt to add $10 billion toward natural disasters in last month’s continuing resolution to fund the government.

FEMA reported that there were twice as many disasters in 2023 than in 2016.
