Youngkin goes on media blitz in fight against ‘unprecedented’ DOJ voter lawsuit

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) took to the airwaves to fight back against the Department of Justice’s new lawsuit against the commonwealth of Virginia , charging that the “unprecedented” lawsuit has ulterior motives.

The DOJ sued the commonwealth after Youngkin issued an executive order in August that removed over 6,300 noncitizens from the state’s voter registration rolls , with the lawsuit stating they were removed “too close” to Election Day. The governor argued that he had used a law signed by former Gov. Tim Kaine (D-VA) in 2006, and Virginia governors have used this law since then to clean up its voter registration rolls.

“Here I am a governor, mandated, and oh, by the way, proud to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution of the commonwealth of Virginia, and by law to make sure we have clean voter rolls, and the Department of Justice shows up 25 days before a presidential election and says ‘stop doing that,’” Youngkin said on Fox News’s Hannity. “To me, this is unprecedented, and I think it represents a Department of Justice that is trying to achieve something other than fair and free elections.”

Youngkin added that the DOJ’s lawsuit is “the next step in a pattern” to undermine the confidence voters have in the election process. He also said his executive order was taken to ensure election integrity is upheld in Virginia.

On CNN, Youngkin questioned why the DOJ waited less than a month before Election Day to pursue this lawsuit, saying it “seems far more political” right now than if they had done so earlier. He added that he firmly believes the DOJ is wrong with this lawsuit.

“Why is it that anyone could argue that a process that removes noncitizens off of our voter rolls is anything else other than common sense and Constitutional?” Youngkin asked network anchor Jake Tapper. “And that’s my frustration with this whole process, which is it started 25 days before a presidential election.”

When asked about Vice President Kamala Harris’s lack of interviews ahead of the 2024 election on Hannity, Youngkin argued this is because she has attempted to run a campaign “on vibes as opposed to substance.” Among the policy matters he claimed Harris has failed to properly preview ahead of the election include global security and immigration.

“The bottom line is they are recognizing so clearly that America is finally calling the bluff that, in fact, a campaign on vibes is not the kind of campaign that attract voters,” Youngkin said.

Early voting in Virginia started on Sept. 20, which saw over 4,200 people cast their ballots, a significant uptick from the roughly 1,200 people who voted on the first day of early voting. Youngkin pushed for those who have yet to vote to do so as soon as they can instead of waiting until Nov. 5, as “you might miss it.”

Prior to Election Day, polling data from last week indicated that Harris is outpacing Trump in Virginia by 11% , with 4% of recipients undecided. Virginia has commonly gone to the Democratic candidate in the Electoral College in recent elections, with the last Republican candidate to win it being former President George W. Bush in 2004.
