The United Auto Workers challenged former President Donald Trump to work a full 12-hour shift at an auto assembly plant following a knock the former president made on autoworkers.

Trump recently claimed in a Bloomberg interview that auto workers simply assemble parts “out of a box.” Trump’s comment, which included him saying “a child” could do the work that UAW autoworkers do, generated controversy online shortly after his interview.

The UAW's X account shared a video uploaded by Dawnya Ferdinansen.

“I challenge you, Trump, to one full 12-hour day in any auto assembly plant,” Ferdinansen said in her video. “I want to see you assemble parts ‘out of a box’ for 12 hours. Until you accept and complete this challenge, until you actually work a manual labor job, you keep the name of the UAW out of your mouth!”

Trump made his remark on UAW workers while defending the economic policies he would implement in a second Trump presidency, including tariffs . He argued tariffs would be used to encourage businesses to produce their goods in the United States.

While Trump has not responded to the UAW’s challenge to work at an assembly plant, he is set to work at a McDonald’s restaurant while campaigning in Pennsylvania this weekend. The former president’s foray into restaurant work is intended to be a jab at Vice President Kamala Harris , who claimed she had worked at McDonald’s at one point in her life.

Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, Harris is seeking to win over union laborers to win states, such as Michigan and Wisconsin. UAW President Shawn Fain spoke at the Democratic National Convention earlier this year , warning that Trump is a “scab” who would betray the labor movement in a heartbeat.

Meanwhile, Teamsters President Sean O’Brien said in September that he would not endorse Harris, nor Trump, in this election . He later revealed in a podcast interview last week that, despite being a Democrat, his party has “f***ed us over for the last 40 years.”
