It’s been a busy 24 hours in Virginia as it relates to tractor-trailer crashes.

In Newport News, an accident involving a burning truck caused hours of delays on I-64. At one point, there were lane closures in both directions and the backup stretched 5 miles.

The incident occurred Thursday morning around 7:30 a.m. on the eastbound side of the highway near the Jefferson Ave. exit.

Police said the truck jack-knifed and caught on fire because the fuel-tank ignited, according to ABC 8 News.

Newport News Fire Department said while the fuel was burning, it was also spreading into the storm drains.

The driver made it out of the truck unharmed, and there were no injuries, NNFD reported.
