After responding to a residential fire call on Sept. 5, Chesterfield County Fire & EMS issued a message to the public stating, “Please do not store guns or anything else in your oven.”

On that Thursday night, firefighters were dispatched to a call where the homeowner reported the oven had exploded, the department stated. When firefighters went into the oven to investigate the cause, they reportedly found a handgun.

A photo shared by the department shows the weapon, which appears to have gotten so hot that it melted into the oven rack.

“It turns out, someone turned the oven on with the gun inside, the weapon heated up, and five rounds went off,” reported Chesterfield County Fire & EMS.

There were no injuries as result of this incident, but the department said the situation could have turned out much differently.

When you place any item in the oven it is easy to forget it is there, which can lead to a fire or something worse when you turn it on, the department added.
