King’s Academy using last season as motivation for 2024

SEYMOUR, Tenn. (WATE) — The King’s Academy is hoping to strike a balance between using last year’s 0-10 season as fuel but also not letting that losing culture linger.

“It’s exciting,” said TKA head coach Jonathan Sellers. “It’s one of those things that we talked about. We gotta move past last season, but at the same time, you wanna remember how painful that was. How hurtful it was when you don’t come out on the right side of the scoreboard consistently. I hope this year that drives us and helps us and motivates us to finish some games late in the fourth quarter and just have some different outcomes on the scoreboard.”

“Last season didn’t go great,” said TKA senior wide receiver Brady Swaggerty. “We had a lot of unfortunate injuries. Last year it sucked.”

Coach Sellers believes his team has the talent to pick up wins this year. Last season, TKA lost five different games by seven points or less.

“I think we’re a little more dynamic on the outside with some of our skill guys that we have this year,” said Sellers. “[A] couple of more guys that can create some more explosive plays both offensively and defensively.”

The team also has adjusted the coaching staff a bit with a new coordinators on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

“It’s been alright,” said TKA junior defensive end and tight end Jack Hamilton. “We’ve handled it well. Our last defensive coordinator had been there for a few years, so it’s been a little weird transitioning back to this one, but it’s good.”

The Lions will look to pick up their first win since Oct. 21, 2022, when they host Grace Christian on Aug. 23.
