Heritage looks to climb up the high school football mountain in 2024

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Former Tennessee Football assistant Joe Osovet is entering year three as head coach of Heritage football. Although the Mountaineers have finished with losing records the past two seasons, Osovet has a good feeling about the 2024 season.

“This is year three,” said Osovet. “Playing 11 freshmen when we first took over the program, we have to start to get some return on our investment. I’m excited about what this group is because of all the experience they now have coming back under our belts.”

The Mountaineers return 13 starters from a season ago. Heritage looks to turn that experience into a winning season.

“I think we’re the strongest, fastest team we’ve had,” said senior Carson Weber. “I think this team has a want to, not just being out there. I think this team has character, and leadership that’s going to be a big part of the season.”

That leadership will prove vital as the Mountaineers will have a new, young quarterback this season in sophomore Gavin French.

“We have to replace a really good one in Wesley Deck,” said Osovet about last year’s starting quarterback. “He was pretty unique. But I’m excited about the kid we have coming back. He’s got all the intangibles you need to play the quarterback spot. He’s got arm talent, can extend plays and is very cognitive. I’m excited to see what that kid can do.”

Heritage kicks off the season this Friday against Maryville.
