KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Work to turn one of the most unique buildings in Knoxville into apartments is moving forward with designs plans for public-facing signage approved by the city.

The Design Review Board on Wednesday approved sign plans for Hotel Knoxville, the angular concrete building that has remained empty since March 2020.

Work to turn Andrew Johnson Building into hotel may soon begin, developers say

The approved signage uses the name “Vision at Knoxville.” Signs would be placed on exterior walls on the east and south elevations.

The building was sold to a California-based investment firm in October 2020 for nearly $17 million. Plans brought before the Development Committee of the Downtown Knoxville Alliance called for units to be refurbished with the majority becoming studio apartments.

I am extremely glad they are going to building other than let it just sit there and rot. Personally, I think it's awesome that they're gonna turn it into apartments. That way, it serves a purpose more than just sitting there
