Two people killed in crash on I-40, KPD says

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ( WATE ) — The Knoxville Police Department is investigating the circumstances that led to a deadly crash on Interstate 40 Monday morning.

The single-vehicle crash occurred near the I-40 East ramp to I-640 East. KPD shared that officers responded to the scene around 6:15 a.m. a.m. Later, just before 8 a.m., the department confirmed that two people were killed in the crash.

Based on the evidence on scene, the involved vehicle was traveling east on the I-40 ramp to I-640 when it ran off the road to the right for reasons that remain unknown and struck a guardrail. The two occupants, who were identified as Florida residents, were pronounced dead at the scene

KPD crash reconstruction personnel are leading the investigation into the crash. At 12:13 p.m., KPD shared that all lanes of travel had reopened.
