NEWPORT, Tenn. ( WATE ) — Authorities have charged a Newport man after a road rage incident that investigators believe led to the death of another man in White Pine earlier this week .

Derwin B. Wilds , 59, of Newport is facing a voluntary manslaughter charge in the shooting death of Jordan Price, according to an affidavit of complaint and probable cause court document.

The affidavit includes a brief police narrative of what authorities believe ensued on Monday, Sept. 23, when the road rage incident was reported and the death of Price occurred. White Pine Police Department officers responded to a reported shooting at 5:22 a.m. on Roy Messer Highway at the intersection of the southside ramp for Interstate 81; arriving at the scene to find Price lying on the ground next to his vehicle with life-threatening injuries.

“Jordan Price was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center by Jefferson County Paramedics with a gunshot wound to the left chest, where he was pronounced dead at 6 a.m.” the narrative stated. “The defendant, Derwin B. Wilds, stated that he was the 911 caller of the incident.”

The narrative goes on to state that Wilds told officers he and Jordan Price “got into a road rage incident a couple of miles back on Roy Messer Highway”, and when they stopped a short distance to the red light, a verbal argument occurred.

Wilds is set to appear in Jefferson County court on Oct. 3.
