First September tornado in recorded East TN history confirmed by NWS

SNEEDVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Following a storm survey, the National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down Tuesday in Hancock County .

The NWS shared that an EF-1 Tornado along Alder Road between Sneedville and Kyles Ford in Hancock County. The NWS added that the tornado had a path length of about six miles and was approximately 250 yards wide. Winds reached a maximum speed of 110 mph.

It is the first tornado in the month of September in recorded East Tennessee history.

In an alert at 6:29 p.m. on Tuesday, NWS shared that the radar indicated tornado debris east of Sneedville moving east at 30 mph. NWS advised everyone in the area to take shelter. There were also warnings about “half dollar-sized hail.” Damage is likely in areas of Hawkins, Hamblen and Scott counties.

Multiple rounds of heavy rainfall are expected to move through the region from South to North on Wednesday. Storm Team 6 is following the latest forecast .
