DANDRIDGE, Tenn. (WATE) — One Jefferson County community is facing a water shortage. The Swannsylvania community, which is near the Jefferson/Cocke County line, receives water from Newport Utilities through the Dandridge Water District, however after the system was damaged in the aftermath of Helene.

The community is under a water boil notice . Brad Phillips, the Director of Emergency Management for Jefferson County, shared that he has been working to come up with a solution to get water back to the community.

“It’s extremely important for them to have clean drinking water for their health and safety. And so, that’s why we were concentrating on making sure they had clean drinking water first. We are working on options for them with the utility district and through other means, through TEMA, to try to do some nonpotable or just water for flushing toilets, watering pets, those kinds of things. We’re working on options for that, but we wanted to make sure we worked on the drinking water first for their life, safety and health,” said Philips.

A Drinking Water Distribution Point has been set up at 2815 Orchard Road in Dandridge for those who need drinking water. The site will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. Phillips said several local businesses, community members and more have donated water, adding that they can accept donations at the distribution point.

“We will maintain this operation until this community has clean drinking water accessible from the tap,” said Phillips.

There is not an estimate for when clean water will be running again, with Phillips saying it could take weeks.
