Kai Thomas Boapeah, age 21, who has ties to Ghana, Africa, and Worcester County, Massachusetts, in the town of Dudley, was recovered in New Haven County on Thursday, June 20, in Seymour Reservoir #2 in New Haven County in Oxford.

The state medical examiner has ruled Boapeah’s death as an accidental drowning.

He had been residing with friends in Waterbury, said Will Healey, spokesman for the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Friends from the Africana Student Organization at the university describe Boapeah as a very talented musician and kind person.

University president Dr. Zulma Toro expressed her condolences on behalf of the university, saying, “We are very saddened to share this tragic news. Please keep Kai’s family in your thoughts and prayers. The Central community extends its sincere thanks to the first responders who courageously tried to save his life.”

Boapeah, a computer science major, was entering his junior year this Fall.

Counseling services are available for any student impacted by the tragedy; call 860-832-1926 or walk in.
