A man was shot at an apartment building in Waterbury on Tuesday by a gunman who is believed to have died by suicide after turning the gun on himself, police said.

Officers just after 6:20 a.m. responded to 47 Armand Drive on a report of a shooting and found a gunshot victim in his apartment, according to Lt. Ryan Bessette of the Waterbury Police Department .

Bessette said the victim, a 65-year-old man, was taken to an area hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening. He is listed in stable condition.

According to Bessette, officers in the apartment building also found a 73-year-old Waterbury man in a common area suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bessette said authorities believe the 73-year-old man shot the other man in the parking lot before the victim retreated into his apartment and called police. Investigators believe the gunman then turned the gun on himself.

“The suspect and victim were known to each other and it is further believed that this was an isolated incident,” Bessette said in a statement.

The shooting remains under investigation by Waterbury detectives.

Bessette said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death for the suspected gunman.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact the Waterbury Police Department Detective Bureau at 203-574-6941 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 203-755-1234.
