Des Moines Police arrested a 31-year-old Kent man on Friday morning, Aug. 2, 2024, following an incident involving a stolen vehicle, a stolen firearm, and a brief foot pursuit.

Officers responded to a report of a suspicious, unlicensed vehicle with a male driver passed out behind the wheel. When officers approached the vehicle, the driver ignored commands and attempted to retrieve a handgun. As officers engaged, the suspect tried to flee by driving away. The vehicle hit spike strips and collided with a large boulder, rendering it inoperable.

The suspect exited the vehicle and fled on foot, forcibly entering a nearby residence through an open garage door. During an altercation with the homeowner, an officer deployed a taser, and after a brief struggle, the suspect was taken into custody. A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded, stolen handgun.

The suspect has over a dozen felony convictions, including possession of a stolen vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm. He also had outstanding felony warrants for similar charges and assault. The suspect is now booked on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, burglary, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

“This incident underscores the diligent work of the officers in our department,” police said. “Their swift response and professionalism led to a successful resolution and the apprehension of a dangerous individual.
