Two Waterloo Police Department officers were shot Sunday morning, and police shot and killed the man involved.

Police had responded to a report of a man with a gun in the 200 block of Manson Street at about 8:22 a.m., Waterloo police said Sunday. Officers located Kelvin Lee Plain Jr., 35, riding a bike nearby in Sullivan Park, according to a Monday news release from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Plain allegedly fled from officers on the bike and then on foot through Sullivan Park. Officers fired a Taser at Plain, knocking him to the ground, the DCI said.

Plain allegedly fired a handgun at two officers, striking one who was inside his vehicle and another who was on foot, according to the DCI. Both officers returned fire, killing Plain.

The shootings happened in the 1200 block of East Fourth Street and Plain was declared dead at the scene.

The two police officers were transported to a local hospital. The officers were in stable condition as of Sunday afternoon, were undergoing surgery and were expected to survive, the Waterloo Courier reported, citing authorities.

The DCI said Monday one officer is expected to be released today.

It is conducting an investigation, a standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.

The Courier reported that the suspect's mother came to the scene and talked with police and Mayor Quentin Hart.

“I just wanted to stay down here long enough until they picked my baby’s body off the ground, and I did that,” the mother told the Courier. “They said he was running through the park, and the police Tased him, and they say my son ended up shooting two of the police officers after he was down on the ground."

The Des Moines Police Department posted a message in support of the Waterloo officers and the department with a headline image that reads, "We Stand With You." The message also says, "The men and women of the DMPD offer their support to and stand with the fellow officers, family, & friends of the Waterloo Police Department police officers shot in the line of duty today.

    "Prayers for a swift recovery."
