The 2024 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) girls basketball state tournament kicked off on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Marshall and Waterloo, both competing in Sectional 4 of Division 4, got off to rousing starts. No. 7 seed Waterloo took down No. 10 seed Racine Lutheran 59-38 while No. 8 seed Marshall crushed No. 9 seed Williams Bay 74-30.

Waterloo's home win on Tuesday came courtesy of two of its senior stars, Tess Blundell and Brenna Huebner. Blundell continued the recent hot streak she's been riding, nailing a trio of three point shots to score a game-high 21 points. Huebner wasn't far behind with 18 of her own. Additionally, junior Kylie Webster poured in nine points and senior Bri Lauersdorf nailed a pair of triples for six.

As for Marshall, the Cardinals shot the lights out in their regional opener. They hit 12 three point shots in total, including an incredible seven from junior Makayla Nemec. Her hot hand led her to a team-high 21 points, followed by senior Wynn Held with 15 and senior Lizet Lopez-Montes with 14.

The path ahead gets much more difficult for both schools in the next round. They'll both hit the road next on Friday, Feb. 23, Waterloo at No. 2 seed Milwaukee Juneau and Marshall at top-seeded The Prairie School.

Milwaukee Juneau earned its high seed with an 18-2 overall record, including a perfect 16-0 record in the Milwaukee City - Blue Conference to claim an undefeated title. The Pioneers received a bye for the opening round. In their two games against non-Milwaukee schools, they lost 68-32 to New Holstein and 68-48 to Brown Deer.

The Prairie School finished the regular season as the No. 2 ranked team in Division 4 in the wissports.net girls basketball coaches poll, trailing only Laconia. The Hawks won the Metro Classic conference this season with a perfect 14-0 record and finished 21-3 overall.
