While the 2023 high school football season seems far in the rear view mirror, it lives on in both the Marshall and Waterloo communities. Both football programs will be represented at the 2024 edition of the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association (WFCA)’s annual senior all-star game.

The South — Small rosters were announced on Wednesday, Feb. 28. Benny Marshall will represent the Pirates of Waterloo as a wide receiver while Peyton Gundelach will rep the Cardinals of Marshall as a defensive lineman. One look at their high school resumes makes it easy to see why they were selected for this distinct honor.

Gundelach has been one of the Eastern Suburban Conference’s best players for the past two seasons. He was honored as conference Offensive Lineman of the Year as both a junior and senior. Additionally, he was a first team all-conference selection along both the defensive and offensive line twice in his career.

He’ll focus on the defensive side of things for the WFCA all-star game. He was a force on that side of the ball as a senior at Marshall, finishing his campaign with 2.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, a forced fumble and recovery, and 34 total tackles.

The all-star game also serves as one last opportunity for Benny Marshall to show what he can do at wide receiver. The UW-Platteville commit will focus more on the defensive side of the ball once he gets to campus, but he was a force on both sides of the ball during his career at Waterloo.

Benny Marshall took home three all-conference honors from the Eastern Suburban in his senior season alone: two first team nods as a punter and returned as well as a second team receiver. This brought his high school total of all-conference recognitions to seven. He was also first team on defense twice, first team on offense once, and honorable mention as a punter once.

Sticking him on the offensive side of the ball is a wise choice. He led Waterloo in every receiving category in 2023 with 33 catches for 492 yards and five touchdowns. In three total years of varsity football, Marshall hauled in 89 passes for 1,392 yards and 18 touchdowns.

The two-day all-star event will be hosted at UW-Oshkosh’s Titan Stadium on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20. Marshall and Gundelach will be in action on Saturday as their South — Small squad takes on the North — Small roster. Kickoff is set for noon.
