With the postseason rapidly approaching, the Waterloo track & field program got some last-minute work in. The Pirates made the trip down to Belleville High School on Friday, May 10 for conference rival Sugar River’s Raider Invite.

Waterloo’s boys scored 42 points to finish eighth of the nine teams in the field. As for the girls, they put up 25.33 team points to finish 10th of the 11 teams competing. Conference rival Lodi won the event on both sides, the girls scoring 136.5 and the boys putting up 192. Host Sugar River finished as runner-up for both as well with the boys scoring 118 team points and the girls finishing with 116.5.

Waterloo’s highest finish of the day came courtesy of senior Cordelia Webber in the pole vault. Her height of seven and a half feet placed second of all vaulters. Senior teammate Alisha Sheshina also vaulted seven feet flat to tie for eighth place.

Top-10 finishes in the field continued for the girls. Senior Maren Dolfin offered up a 14 flat in the long jump to finish ninth, the same position senior Tova Gangstad earned in the discus with a throw of 76-4.

On the track, the Waterloo girls’ best effort came from freshman Calla Schumann. She raced a time of 15:56.28 for fifth place in the 3,200 meter run. Schumann also had a solid race in the 1,600 meter run, where she placed eighth with a time of 6:56.70. Elsewhere, senior Evelyn Dominguez-Carrillo nabbed sixth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:11.85. The girls’ best relay result came in the 4x100, where the Pirates put together a time of 58.99 seconds for fifth place.

Fourth place proved to be a very common thread for the boys. It happened three times in the field portion of the meet alone. Junior Kameron Ring did it in the triple jump with a distance of 38-7, junior Ryan Fugate pole vaulted his way there at 11 feet flat, and sophomore Ben Ugorji tossed a 129-4 for fourth in the discus.

This trend continued on the track, primarily in the distance runs. Junior Owen Koele finished fourth in the 3,200 meter run with a time of 11:29.41, as did junior teammate David Cefalu in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:11.67. Even the boys 4x800 meter relay team placed fourth with a time of 9:06.89.

Relays as a whole were solid for the Waterloo boys as they placed fifth in the 4x400 (3:45.78) and sixth in the 4x200 (1:40.89). Elsewhere on the track, senior Jens Novak placed 10th in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 18.86 seconds and sophomore Isaac Opsteen nabbed eighth in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:20.69.

With Capitol conference rivals Lodi, Wisconsin Heights, Columbus, Sugar River, Lake Mills, and Cambridge in attendance, Friday’s action served as a perfect warm-up for this week’s action. Waterloo will make the trip to Lake Mills High School on Tuesday, May 14 for the 2024 Capitol Conference meet.

This will be the last meet Waterloo has before the start of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) state tournament, which kicks off on Monday, May 20 with regionals. The Pirates will be running as part of regional 4C in Division 3, hosted at Deerfield High School. Other schools in attendance include Abundant Life Christian/Saint Ambrose, Cambridge, Catholic Central, Deerfield, Faith Christian, Johnson Creek, Madison Country Day, Marshall, Palmyra-Eagle, Parkview, St. John’s Northwest, University Lake, and Wisconsin Deaf.
