The Waterloo track & field program has wrapped up its regular season. The Pirates did so on Tuesday, May 14 by traveling to Lake Mills High School for the 2024 Capitol Conference tournament.

Both the boys and girls placed ninth of the 10 teams attendance. The Pirate boys scored 24 team points while the girls put up 17. Lakeside Lutheran won conference for the boys with a team score of 188, followed by Lodi at 161 and Sugar River in third with 104. Lodi won for the girls at 132.5, narrowly outpacing Lakeside Lutheran with 126.5. Columbus rounded out the top three with 92 team points.

Waterloo did not come up with any individual conference titles, but came very close in the boys discus. There, sophomore Ben Ugorji finished as runner-up with a personal record throw of 148’1. Also in the field portion of the meet, junior Ryan Fugate placed sixth in the pole vault at 11 feet flat while fellow junior Kameron Ring placed seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 38’3.25.

On the track, the boys performed well in the distance runs. Junior David Cefalu led the charge, finishing sixth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:12.01. Fellow junior Owen Koele also finished high in the 3,200 meter run, nabbing eighth place with a time of 10:54.98.

Distance also proved to provide an edge for the Waterloo boys in the relays. Their best effort came in the 4x800 meter relay, a fifth place finish. Cefalu and Koele teamed up with junior Harrison Schaefer and sophomore Isaac Opsteen to log a time of 9:03.19.

The Waterloo girls’ highest finish also came in the field portion of the meet. Seniors Cordelia Webber and Alisha Sheshina were tied in a logjam for fourth place, both achieving a height of seven and a half feet.

The girls also got a boost from a pair of individual seventh place finishes on the track. Senior Corryn Retzloff did it in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:44.45. Freshman Calla Schumann also ran a time of 15:33.49 in the 3,200 meter run for seventh place.

Waterloo’s girls got their highest relay finish in the 4x100 meter relay. There, seniors Maren Dolfin, Magaly Carrillo, and Lily Jeffers were joined by sophomore Anna Keuneke to put up a time of 57.91 seconds for sixth place.

Next up for Waterloo is the 2024 Wiscosnin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) state tournament. The Cardinals will compete in Regional 4C of Division 3 at Deerfield High School on Monday, May 20. Other teams in attendance will be Abundant Life Christian/Saint Ambrose, Cambridge, Catholic Central, Deerfield, Faith Christian, Johnson Creek, Madison Country Day, Marshall, Palmyra-Eagle, Parkview, St. John’s Northwest, University Lake, and Wisconsin Deaf.
