    Waterloo track & field sends eight to sectionals

    The 2024 track & field season carries on for Waterloo. The Pirates traveled to Deerfield High School on Monday, May 20 to compete in Regional 4C of Division 3. There, they faced some tough competition but still produced some highlights.

    Waterloo's boys placed seventh of the 14 teams in attendance with a combined score of 49. The girls placed 11th with a score of 21. Rival Marshall won the boys' regional with a team score of 146, followed by Abundant Life Christian with 119.5 and Deerfield with 108. Host Deerfield claimed the girls' side of things with a team score of 125, followed by Abundant Life Christian at 85 and Marshall with 79.

    Waterloo's two strongest events on the day were the discus toss and pole vault, both of which produced a pair of sectional qualifiers. Both of the discus qualifiers were boys, led by sophomore Ben Ugorji who placed third with a throw of 127-11. Junior teammate Kellan Smith also nabbed fourth place with a toss of 123-09.

    Pole vault yielded a third place finisher for both the boys and girls. Junior Ryan Fugate got it done with a vault of 11'3". Senior Alisha Sheshina was the lone Waterloo girl to advance to sectionals, nabbing third place with a vault of eight feet flat.

    Juniors David Cefalu and Owen Koele earned themselves a pair of sectional qualifications. Cefalu earned one as an indivudal as he placed fourth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:07.61. Koele also earned third place in the 3,200 meter run with a time of 10:52.27. They came together to run in the 4x800 meter relay, which placed third with a time of 8:56.11. They were joined by junior Harrison Schaefer as well as sophomore Isaac Opsteen.

    Rounding out Waterloo's sectional qualifiers was senior Benny Marshall. He leapt a distance of 19-0.5 in the long jump to place third.

    Qualified athletes will now head to Horicon High School on Thursday, May 23 for WIAA sectionals. The top three finishers in each event at sectionals will punch a ticket to the 2024 WIAA track & field state meet. The event will be hosted at Veterans Memorial Stadium Complex in La Crosse on Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1.
