Striking Amazon drivers picket outside Skokie delivery station
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Dozens of Amazon drivers took the picket line in north suburban Skokie on Monday, a day ahead of the online retail giant's popular "Prime Day" sales.The drivers, who have been on strike since June 26, said they're living paycheck to paycheck, getting paid around $20 per hour, while rarely scheduled for a full 40-hour work week, according to Teamsters Local 705.Chanting, "Workers unite, together we fight," the drivers picketed Monday morning outside Amazon's delivery station in Skokie.They're demanding better pay, affordable healthcare, and safer working conditions. Many said they're often forced to drive dangerous vans, and have been pressured by the company not to report on-the-job injuries.Amazon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Demolition Has Begun At OLA But You Wouldn’t Know It By Looking At The Front Of The Building
The demolition of Our Lady of Angels in Joliet has begun. As first reported by WJOL in October of 2022 the retirement home was on life support and would be closing soon. The last residents left the building at the end of January in 2023 with a final mass held on February 11, 2023. Since then the Sisters of St. Francis nuns have held estate sales to sell furniture, pianos, office supplies and more to the public. While you can’t see the demolition from the front of the building, there is fencing surrounding the building. Gould Brothers Construction from Joliet is handling the demolition which has begun in the rear of the sprawling building at 1201 Wyoming Avenue on Joliet’s west side.

Severe weather slams central Illinois, again
For the second time in as many nights, damaging winds caused widespread damage and power outages. The storms Monday night resulted in staggering wind gusts. A corn crib was destroyed by a 105 mile per hour wind gust near Camp Grove in Marshall County. South Pekin clocked a 78 mile per hour wind gust, Elmwood 71 mph and Lewistown 70 mph. Wind gusts of 60 to 70 miles per hour were common over most of the area. Several communities reported wind damage with the main problem being trees and tree limbs knocking down power lines and causing roads and streets to be blocked. We’ll get a better idea of damage when it’s daylight. The Monday night storms hit as some communities were cleaning up from storms Sunday night which caused damage in Henry and Bloomington.
