The lucky winner of a million-dollar lottery drawing seemingly waited until the last minute to claim her cash prize, which would have been given away had a few more weeks gone by.

The unidentified winner collected the winnings from the Powerball lottery almost a year after the drawing. The reason for the delay was not made clear as the winner sent a trustee, Elizabeth Caruso, to collect the money. Elizabeth entered the headquarters of the Massachusetts State Lottery in Dorchester Wednesday to receive her client's prize.

The commission said the lucky winning ticket was bought at a Metro Mini Mart located on Main Street in Watertown, which is about 10 miles out from Boston. The store is poised to receive a hefty $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket, according to the rules of the Massachusetts Lottery Commission.

Reports said the ticket was sold almost a year ago on Aug. 21, 2023. The state lottery commission dictates that winners of the lottery have one year to claim their prize before the money is released back into the commonwealth. CBS News reported the winning numbers were 3-4-12-22-28, with a Powerball of 16.

Lottery winnings amounting more than $103,000 must be claimed in-person at the headquarters in Dorchester, the state's lottery commission states. The million-dollar ticket wasn't the only winnings announced in the Boston area.

In addition to the unidentified player's win, another ticket from the Mash Cash game yielded $100,000 worth of money. It was bought out of a Quick Stop Mini Mart in Seekonk. Not all players claimed their prizes as two $50,000 Powerball tickets, winners for a July 19, 2023 drawing, was put back into circulation.

There have been a few lottery winners in Massachusetts recently. Francisca Uceta De Placencio, a Salem resident, snagged a million-dollar prize from the “$4,000,000 Monopoly Doubler” ticket game. Mass Lotto said the resident chose the lump sum of cash option rather than receiving multiple payments.

She brought home $650,000 before taxes. De Placencio plans to use the funds to help with family expenses. Plymouth resident Howard Kendall Jr. was another player lucky enough to snag the jackpot. He bought the lucky winner while on a store run to a local 7-11.

He also planned to use the money to support his children and grandchildren. Prior the the win, Kendall said, he dreamt that he'd randomly buy a winning lottery ticket. According to Mass Live, sales for both the Powerball and Mega Millions tickets raised about 4% over the course of a year.

The increased sales yielded a record-setting $848.3 million.
