WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – It was the perfect day for a swim.

The William J. Flynn Pool on the north side of Watertown held its opening ceremony on Friday, June 28. Members of the past present from the Watertown City Council and other dignitaries were on hand for the event.

The pool has been closed since 2020, but got a new lease on life with a construction project that started in July 2023. The renovations included work on the pool, bath house and building a splash pad.

“As mayor, I encourage every resident of Watertown to take full advantage of this new facility, said Watertown Mayor Sarah Compo-Pierce, “Whether you are parent looking for a safe place for your children to swim, someone looking for a new way to stay active or a person simply looking to cool off on a hot summer day, this pool and the splash pad are here for you.”

Compo-Pierce had been critical of the cost of the pool project, which clocked in at around $4 million.

The L-shaped pool has a length of 25 yards and is eight feet deep. The pool also has four lanes for lap swimming.

William J. Flynn III, who is the grandson of the man that for which the pool is named after, spoke at the opening ceremony. The pool was first named after his grandfather in 1981.

For generations, my family have enjoyed pools provided by the City of Watertown of the North side. My parents, my siblings, my cousins, my children, my grandchildren have all enjoyed the pool in the City of Watertown, especially here on the North Side.

The splash pad will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day during the summer season. The pool will have hours of noon until 7 p.m. every day.
