    Northern Credit Union warns members about password scam

    WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – Northern Credit Union issued an alert about scams regarding passwords on member accounts.

    In an email sent out Wednesday afternoon, the financial institution warned that some members have been receiving automated calls from 315-783-0155 stating their passwords have been reset. The individual is prompted to select 1 if this was not them, which routes to an imposter attempting to retrieve their debit card information. Northern adds if you believe you have received a fraudulent text message or phone call, to call the credit union at 315-782-0155.

    Consumer alert: Scams targeting older New Yorkers now more common, successful, and expensive

    The bank reminds its customers they will not ask members to reset passwords or to verify any of the following over the phone:

    • Your full debit or credit card number.
    • Your PIN (Personal Identification Number).
    • Your CVV number.
    • Your full account (member) number or social security number.
    • Any Online or Mobile Banking passwords.
    • Any verification code to access your account.

    If anyone receives a suspicious call or text stating they are from Northern Credit Union, hang up and call Northern at 315-782-0155 to verify whether the call or text was legitimate or fraudulent and assist you.

    Here are some tips if you feel your account has been compromised:

    • Let Northern know so we can help. If you have anyone has questions about account security, or a text or a phone call you’ve received, please do not hesitate to contact the credit union by calling 315-782-0155 or visit any of their relationship centers.
    • Block your debit card through Online and Mobile Banking. The bank has a user guide or how-to video to learn how to block and unblock your debit card while you check the security of your account.
    • Report the scam. Visit this website for more information on how to report scams and fraud, along with examples of common scams to be aware of.

    Here are some other tips to keep personal accounts safe:

    • N ever disclose personal information over the phone to unknown persons such as SSN, account, debit, and credit card numbers, or MICR number (the number at the bottom of checks).
    • Add an additional layer of protection to the account by adding a code word or phrase. This unique word/phrase will be used to verify members before discussing any account information or transactions.
