Barton County Clerk candidates answer questions at political forum
Early voting has already started for the Aug. 6 primary election. Thursday evening, several local candidates attended a forum hosted by the League of Women Voters - Barton County at the Great Bend Senior Center. Two candidates are vying for the Barton County Clerk position. Candidates were given two questions ahead of the forum. The second question for clerk candidates pertained to how their office reaches out to new voters. Incumbent Bev Schmeidler listed the various locations in Barton County where citizens can register to vote and said Great Bend High School classes and the DMV can also be helpful.
KU signs women’s golf to contract extension

At his final school board meeting, outgoing Lawrence Superintendent Anthony Lewis said his hope for the district and greater community is “collaboration over conflict.”. “I will tell you, we all know in this community, we have faced some extreme challenges over the years,” Lewis said Monday. “There have been competing values, there have been varying factions, and at times, our differences have caused us to turn inward … Let us always assume positive intent, focus on building bridges and fostering even more collaboration. Let’s continue to engage in constructive dialogue.”
Kaelen Culpepper's selection highlighted a historic MLB Draft for Kansas State baseball
Kaelen Culpepper achieved a Kansas State baseball first during last week's 2024 Major League Baseball Draft, and so did the Wildcats as a team. Culpepper, the Wildcats' junior shortstop, became the school's first-ever position player to be selected in the first round when he went to the Minnesota Twins with the No. 21 overall pick. The only previous K-State first-rounder was current Major League pitcher Jordan Wicks, who also went at No. 21, to the Chicago Cubs in 2021.

Barton college approves 5% increase to salary budget for 2025
As discussed at this month’s study session, the Barton Community College Board of Trustees approved an operational budget and published budget for the 2025 fiscal year at Monday’s regular meeting. The budget remains revenue neutral, keeping collected tax dollars the same as the year prior, estimated to garner $9,574,623 in taxes.
