An Amazon delivery driver and a resident of Oconee County engaged in a potentially dangerous scuffle over a handgun recently near Watkinsville.

The fight occurred at about 2 p.m. June 20 along a rural dirt drive off Colham Ferry Road south of Watkinsville, according to an Oconee County sheriff’s report.

Deputies said a 62-year-old man, who was walking his dog, initiated the dispute when he stood in the road and stopped the Amazon van because in his opinion it was speeding.

The 46-year-old Winder woman driving the van told deputies that the man opened the vehicle's door, grabbed her, and that’s when she reached into her purse to retrieve a 9mm pistol.

“It was a dangerous situation,” Oconee Sheriff James Hale said Tuesday.

According to the incident report, the Amazon driver said she was forced to stop because the man and his dog were standing in the roadway. After stopping, she told officers the man pulled her out of the vehicle.

She grabbed her pistol, but both ended up outside the van and on the ground struggling over the firearm, according to the report. The man was able to pull the gun from her grip, at which point deputies said he walked back to his home.

She called 911 and Hale was the first to arrive on scene.

The sheriff said the woman was in her van and the man was nearby at his home.

“I got there and made sure everything was cool and the rest of the guys showed up,” Hale said about five other deputies who arrived.

The loaded gun was recovered at the man’s home. Deputies interviewed both parties, which led to the arrest of the man on misdemeanor charges of battery and reckless conduct.

The man was jailed, then released the next day on bond.

“It could have been worse than it was. I think he understands he was in the wrong,” Hale said.
