Fareway still planning second Waukee store, but hasn't set a construction date

Fareway still plans to build a second location in northwest Waukee but the supermarket chain does not yet know when.

Fareway currently has a store at 200 S.E. Laurel St. in Waukee. The company also owns more than 7 acres on adjoining parcels about 2 miles away at the southwest corner of Northwest Sunrise Drive and Northwest 10th Street, according to Dallas County property records.

The store, when built, will be the westernmost Fareway location in Des Moines' immediate suburbs — a distinction currently held by the Laurel Street store, with the next stores to the west being in the outer-ring metro communities of Adel, Perry and Winterset.

City officials had told the Des Moines Register last year that construction would begin in 2024. But McClane Gill, spokesperson for Fareway, said the company never had a firm construction start date, so there's not been any delay.

"Right now, we are simply trying to find the right spot in our calendar given the number of projects we are working on here at Fareway," Gill told the Register in an email, but added that "our plans have remained to open a new store" in Waukee.

Phillip Sitter covers the western suburbs for the Des Moines Register. Phillip can be reached via email at psitter@gannett.com or on X, formerly known as Twitter, at @pslifeisabeauty.
