(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — If you've been keeping up with the Chicago area's piping plovers, we've got some baby news for you.

Blaze and Pepper are the proud parents of new chicks that hatched along Waukegan's lakeshore.

The Lake County Audubon Society announced three of the plover's four eggs hatched on Thursday after a 26-day incubation period.

The remaining egg was still being incubated in the north suburb.

Audubon Society Officials say while they're cautiously optimistic, the chicks face an uphill battle for survival.

Waukegan made the endangered Great Lakes piping plover its official city bird last month.

In one of the latest updates on Chicago’s own plover Imani and his mate Searocket, the pair has a full clutch of eggs.
