Whitefish Bay was the No. 1 ranked team in Division 2 as of Week 6 in the season, according to the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association.

Waunakee (9-2-1 overall, 3-0 in Badger Large Conference play) knocked them off their perch on Saturday, emerging with a hard-fought 1-0 non-conference win. Both defenses were on point.

“Girls put in a really solid effort on Saturday, beating a very good, organized Whitefish Bay team,” said Warriors’ head coach Andrew Moll. “We were proud of our team’s defensive effort this game, limiting Whitefish Bay’s chances on goal. We also played well offensively generating a number of great scoring opportunities. The Whitefish Bay goalkeeper had a great game and gave up very few second chance opportunities for us.”

Charli Smith’s goal in the 33rd minute was enough for Waunakee, currently ranked No. 3 in the WSCA Division 1 coaches poll. Sophie Schnaubelt and Alyssa Thomas assisted.

The Warriors forced Whitefish Bay goalkeeper Audyn Krueger to make 12 saves. For Waunakee, Malia Zillman finished with five saves.

On Tuesday, the Warriors travel to Fort Atkinson.
