    Boys lacrosse: Warriors cap off undefeated regular season with Badger title

    They finished off an undefeated regular season, with a Badger Conference championship to boot.

    Now, it’s time for the No. 1 ranked Waunakee boys’ lacrosse team to turn its focus to the postseason, as regional play begins on Friday, May 24.

    On Monday, the Warriors capped off the regular season with a tight 11-9 win at Oregon, as Gunnar McFadden finished with a hat trick. It was tied 6-6 at the half and 7-7 going into the fourth quarter, where Waunakee outscored Oregon 4-2.

    Brandon Sawicki, Charlie King and Justin Sawicki had two goals apiece, while Michael Mercuri and Ethan Evans also found the back of the net.

    Sam Hogland, McFadden, Evans and Justin Sawicki each had an assist, as Wade Bryan scooped up five groundballs and Cole Savola had three and four forced turnovers/takeaways.

    Hogland and Bryan collected three forced turnovers/takeaways apiece.

    Hosting Mukwonago on Friday, the Warriors pulled out a 7-2 victory, as King tallied three goals. Evans, Adrian Millin, Savola and Justin Sawicki also had goals. McFadden and Brandon Sawicki dished out assists.

    Waunakee was clinging to a 3-1 lead going into the third quarter, when the Warriors outscored Mukwonago 3-0. The two teams traded goals in the fourth.

    Bryan gathered up four groundballs and had four forced turnovers/takeaways, while Jake Duren totaled five forced turnovers/takeaways. Savola picked up three groundballs, as did Nate Samson, and had four forced turnovers/takaways. Samson and Hogland finished with three forced turnovers/takeaways apiece, Logan Ehle and Millin had two groundballs apiece.

    In a 13-1 drubbing of Sauk Prairie on Tuesday, May 14, King and Millin both had hat tricks, as Alex Mikkelson and Gabe Samuelson totaled two goals apiece and Evans, Hogland and Travis Jenson had a goal each.

    Mikkelson also doled out three assists, as did Brandon Sawicki. Samuelson also had two assists, while King and Evans each had an assist.

    Ehle had a big game, finishing with team-high totals in groundballs (six) and forced turnovers/takeaways (four). Ian Hamilton totaled five groundballs, as Mercuri had three. Duren, Calvin Behnke and Margala collected three forced turnovers/takeaways apiece.

    Ian Hamilton won 11 of 12 faceoffs, while Millin won three of four. John Tasker got the best of both of his two faceoffs.

    Goalie Isaac Schultz had three saves.

    Waunakee goes 18-0 overall in the regular season and 10-0 in Badger Conference play. After opening with a bye, the Warriors will take on either Whitefish Bay/Dominican/Nicolet/Shorewood or the Elkhorn co-op on Tuesday, May 28, at home.
