By virtue of their second-place finish at the WIAA Sauk Prairie Regional, held at Lake Wisconsin Country Club on Tuesday, May 21, the Waunakee boys’ golf team advanced to sectionals.

Dealing with four weather delays and nearly eight hours of golf, the Warriors ended up with a 302 — good enough to send them to the WIAA sectional at Blackhawk Country Club slated for Wednesday.

Middleton shot a 294 to take first, as Sauk Prairie and Madison Memorial also advanced.

Three Warriors fired 74s to lead the way, as Brady Piazza, Peyton Albers and Drew Berres tied for third overall. KC Nickel and Peter Wangarin both shot 80s.

    Conference Tournament

The dust has finally settled in the race for the Badger Large Conference boys’ golf title.

On Tuesday, May 14, Waunakee took second in the conference tournament at Door Creek Golf Course, shooting a 305 and finishing one stroke behind Milton.

As a result, the Warriors finished third overall in the conference standings, ending up behind overall winner Milton (45 points) and DeForest (41 points).

“It was a close battle all season for these teams as conference mini meets and the conference tournament were decided by one stroke throughout the season,” said Betsy Zadra, head coach for Waunakee.

At the conference tournament, Milton’s Cade Wieland birdied the last hole to clinch the title for Milton. KC Nickel shot a 74 and tied for third place, while Brady Piazza, Peyton Albers and Drew Berres all tied for fifth with a 77. Peter Wangerin shot an 84.

“All four scoring players for the Warriors finished in the top five out of 40 players,” said Zadra. “They were the only team to do that on the always challenging Door Creek.”

Points doubled for the conference tournament.

Waunakee placed four golfers on the Badger Large All-Conference Team.

“This is a great accomplishment considering this is probably the strongest conference in the state,” said Zadra. “KC Nickel and Peyton Albers made first team all-conference and Drew Berres and Brady Piazza made secoind team all-conference.”
