    Waunakee doubles tandems dominate tournament

    Waunakee tennis was among fourteen other teams to participate in the Badger Large conference tournament on Saturday, Sep 28 at Nielsen tennis stadium in Madison.

    In the number one singles flight was Taylor Copeland, who defeated Addison Acker from Sun Prairie in the first round by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Copeland advanced to face Eliza Martin of Monona Grove but lost, 6-0, 6-0. Martin would move on to defeat DeForest’s Chloe Knutson to place third at the tournament. Madi Anderson defeated Addy Damon of Beaver Dam in the number two singles flight. Anderson went on to win her next two matches, but fell to Reedsburg’s Sarah Schaeffer in the third place qualifying match.

    In the number three singles flight, Emma Hendricks defeated Lauren Thomas of Oregon by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Hendricks moved on to face Edgewood’s Abigail Barker but fell, 6-3, 6-2. Barker would go on to win third place. Sofia Chaudhary eased her way through her first three opponents; Thea Vinfeld (6-0, 6-0), Lydia Schroeder (6-3, 6-1), Camryn Reynolds (6-2, 6-2). Chaudhary was in the championship match with Giselle Lindert from Monona Grove. Both girls battled, but Lindert came out on top with scores of 6-2, 7-5. Chaudhary finished the flight in second place.

    Caroline Lee and Ely Liu have had a historic season as a doubles tandem. The duo played undefeated ball against all conference opponents this season and finished with a 29-2 record. Their 29 wins is the most in the state for girls high school tennis. At the tournament, the duo continued their dominance by winning the number one doubles flight bracket. After their first round bye, the duo sailed through their opponents; Rockweiler/Molitor (6-3, 6-0), Jensen/Miller (6-1, 6-1), Knott/Golesh (6-1, 6-0).

    Just like Lee and Liu, Carly Hottman and Nadia Chaudhary had a dominant season as a duo. Hottman and Chaudhary had 23 wins as a team during the season. Hottman and Chaudhary defeated their opponents, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1, 7-5, and 6-3, 6-2 to win in the championship round of the tournament.

    In the number three doubles flight, Marah Westphal and Caroline Schnaubelt finished in second place to Monona Grove’s Kate Watson and Lucy Bittner. The Waunakee duo has had an impressive season by etching 24 wins as a team.

    Team scores: Monona Grove 19, Waunakee 15, Edgewood 13, DeForest 11, McFarland 10, Milton 8, Oregon 8, Reedsburg 8, Baraboo 4, Beaver Dam 3, Watertown 2, Stoughton 2, Fort Atkinson/Cambridge 2, Sauk Prairie 0, Portage 0.
