Taking out their frustrations, having lost three of their last four, the Waunakee Local 9 pummeled Plain 18-0 on Sunday, July 7.

It had to feel good after falling 16-6 to Ashton on July 4 at home.

The A’s scored two in the top of the first inning, before Waunakee responded with three of their own. An RBI single by Jeff Thomasen and a Ryne Fueger two-run double were the big blows in that frame.

Ashton grabbed the lead back, but the Local Nine tied it on doubles by Jack Shepski and Jarrett Fueger. However, Ashton put four runs on the board in the top of the third to go up 8-4. The A’s kept padding their advantage, adding a single run in the fourth and plating five runs in the top of the fifth.

Waunakee (5-5 on the season) scored a pair in the bottom of the fourth, with an RBI double by Luke Shepski and a run-scoring singley by Danny Cotter. Ashton scored two runs to extend the lead to 10 runs, and the game was called after seven innings.

Waunakee had 11 hits, including three from Ryne Fueger and one hit each for Jack Shepski, Shea DuCharme, Jarrett Fueger, Riley Ripp, Thomasen, Henry Pitsch, Luke Shepski and Cotter.

Three days later, the Local 9 jumped all over Plain. Waunakee scored two runs in the second inning, as Zach Johnson hit a two-run single.

The Local 9 broke it open with a five-run third inning, as Johnson doubled to plate three. A Wade Farmer RBI double tacked on another run in the top of the fifth. Waunakee kept pouring it on, scoring eight runs in the top of the sixth. Bases-loaded walks by Farmer, Andy Nordloh and Jarrett Fueger kept the turnstile spinning. Ripp had a two-run single, Thomasen singled in a run, and Ryne Fueger smacked a bases-loaded double.

Cotter singled in a run in the seventh, before Ryne Fueger was hit by a pitch to score Ripp.

Johnson also excelled on the mound, going six innings and allowing four hits and two walks, while striking out three. Dayne Oleson pitched the last inning, fanning three while allowing one hit.

    Sauk Prairie 6, Waunakee 4

They had chances to score late, but the Local 9 couldn’t rally to beat Sauk on the road on Sunday.

Sauk took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on three walks, a single and a fielder’s choice. Waunakee countered in the top of the second to tie it on a Zach Johnson two-run single.

Manufacturing another run in the bottom of the fourth on a single, a walk, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly, Sauk wrested the lead back and tallied three more runs in the fifth to go up 6-3.

Waunakee scored a run in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI double by Ryne Fueger. In the eighth, the Local 9 added another on an RBI single by Ryne Fueger. Zach Johnson singled to load the bases with one out, but the Local 9 couldn’t score any more runs.

The Local 9 again loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but a ground out ended the game.

Waunakee outhit Sauk 14-4, as Henry PItsch and Jarrett Fueger each had 4 hits. Ryne Fueger and Zach Johnson had two hits apiece and Andy Nordloh and Jeff Thomasen each had a hit.

Johnson pitched the first 4 innings, giving up two hits, four walks and three earned runs while striking out two. Blake Bieri pitched the fifth inning, allowing one hit, one walk and three unearned runs while striking out one. Oleson pitched the sixth, walking one while racking up four strikeouts — a dropped third strike allowed a strikeout victim to reach base. Nordloh pitched the last two innings and allowed one hit and struck out two.

Waunakee will finish the regular season next weekend, hosting Cross Plains on Saturday at 1 p.m. and traveling to Cazenovia for the regular-season finale on Sunday.
