A weekend split left the Waunakee Local 9 with a .500 record.

After falling to Cross Plains on Saturday 6-3, the Local 9 blasted Cazenovia 19-7 on Sunday, as Waunakee evened its record at 6-6 to wrap up the regular season.

On Saturday, Luke Shepski smacked a two-run homer over the rightfield fence in the second inning to get the Local 9 off on the right foot. Meanwhile, Zach Johnson was rolling on the mound, but in the seventh, he started to run out of gas.

Taking advantage of two walks, an error and a bases-clearing double, Cross Plains moved ahead 3-2. Waunakee tied it in the bottom of the eighth, as Riley Ripp hit a two-out single and Henry Pitsch followed with a single. Pinch runner Matt Stanek scored on a Jeff Thomasen double to left field. Luke Shepski was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but the Local 9 couldn’t take the lead.

Cross Plains plated three runs in the ninth to claim the victory.

Johnson tossed six and two-thirds innings, giving up four hits, two walks and three unearned runs, with one strikeout. Dayne Oleson pitched a third of an inning and surrendered one hit and struck out one. Jack Shepski covered the last two innings, allowing four hits and three unearned runs. He struck out 2.

Again, the Local 9 got off to a fast start, tallying three runs in the first inning. They never let up, taking only seven innings to dispose of Cazenovia on the road.

A Jarrett Fueger double brought in a run, with Luke Shepski hitting a sacrifice fly to score another. Thomasen reached base via error, getting another run home.

Cazenovia got a run back in the bottom of the second, leaving the score 3-1 after two innings. A two-out single by Misha Capaul scored Luke Shepski, who had doubled, in the top of the third.

Waunakee put four runs on the board in the fourth, as Johnson scored on a passed ball, Jarrett Fueger hit an RBI double and Pitsch drew a bases loaded walk.

Cazenovia pulled to within 8-3 in the bottom of the fourth, but a nine-run fifth inning blew it open for Waunakee.

Riley Ripp and Jarrett Fueger singled, with Luke Shepski doubling to score both. Thomasen singled and Shea DuCharme walked to load the bases for Wade Farmer, who hit a towering grand slam home run.

Trevor Stevens then singled to keep the rally going. Jack Shepski doubled to score Stevens. Ripp walked and Fueger singled to score Jack Shepski. Ripp scored on an error to make the score 17-3. Cazenovia scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 17-7.
