Aug. 28, 1924

The Waunakee baseball team defeated Mazomanie on Sunday by a score of 5-4. Waunakee is now tied for third place in the league standing with Mazo.

Mrs. Julia Johnson, wife of Andrew Johnson, died at her home in Madison Friday after a brief illness. The Johnsons formerly owned the Brausen Hotel.

John M. Hiney piloted his plane Tuesday where he took up the following passengers: Dutch Bernards; Geo. W. Stehr, Ray Stehr, Harry Koltes, Mary O’Malley and Werner Noltner.

The new Union High School of DeForest was dedicated Tuesday night.

Aug. 23, 1934

M. and Mrs. Frank Raemisch of Springfield Corners announce the birth of a son on Aug. 18.

The Waunakee baseball team defeated Arlington here Sunday 27-1. Arlington was forced to pick two players from the fans to field a team.

Sr. M. Genevieve, Sr. M. Angela and Sr. M. Sybilla, the superior, returned Friday to resume their duties as teachers at St. John’s School.

Gerald Fitzgibbon’s Ford V-8 was stolen from its parking place in Madison Saturday evening.

Aug. 25, 1949

Classes at Waunakee High School will start on Monday, Sept. 12, this year.

Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Schwenn and rejoicing over the birth of a daughter at St. Mary’s Hospital on Tuesday, Aug. 16.

Sr. M. Alrose was among the 15 nuns who were admitted to Perpetual Vows at St. Agnes Convent, Fond du Lac, on Monday, Aug. 15.

Carl Statz has on display two stalks of corn that measure 16 feet and the ears are 1 ¾ feet from the ground.

Mr. and Mrs. James Hildebrand of Madison are the proud parents of a son born at St. Mary’s Hospital on Aug. 15.

Aug. 26, 1954

Mr. and Mrs. Robert G. Biehl have purchased the Fairview Motel on Hwy. 30, two blocks off of East Washington Avenue.

Classes at Waunakee High School will start on Sept. 7; Grade School Aug. 30; St. John’s, Sept. 8.

Farmers are beginning to fill their silos. This year, with the corn very tall, it is going to be a hard job.

Aug. 20, 1964

Miss Anna Fay Filbern, 83, well-known resident of Westport, died at a Madison hospital on Friday morning after a long illness.

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hellenbrand, Waunakee, are the parents of a son born at St. Mary’s Hospital on Aug. 14.

Henry E. Zander, cashier of Farmers State Bank, left Sunday for a two-week attendance at the Graduate School of banking at the UW-Madison Aug. 16-29. This will =be his third year at the school.

Coach Dick Trotta and assistants Jack Reed and Tom Kumlien issued football equipment to 51 young men Saturday morning, Aug. 15.

Aug. 29, 1974

Brother Edwin (Thomas Ripp) celebrated his 25th Jubilee as a Trappist monk at Our Lady of the Holy Spirit at Conyers, Ga.

Pictured is Hattie Nichols, who is 94 years old and is residing at the Waunakee Manor. She was born in 1880 and can relate many stories of the pioneer days in the West.

Waunakee captured the North Center Division championship last week by dumping first-round champion Middleton on Sunday.

Aug. 9, 1984

School officials from Waunakee and two nearby communities met to discuss concerns about losing land to larger municipalities through annexation.

The Wisconsin Public Service Commission has approved an increase in Waunakee’s water rates.

Due to the success of the first fall garage sale a year ago, the Waunakee Arts Council has decided to make it an annual event, along with the spring garage sale day.

July 28, 1994

Chris Faust of Waunakee was reunited with Pastor Eric Cimala, a dear friend of her family and a source of strength as she and her family struggled during and after World War II.

Terah Shober, John Mabie and Hollee Stone recently returned from a two-week trip to Jamaica where they helped in building a village for the deaf.

Westport’s plan to create the town’s first parks committee is going smoothly and more details were hammered out at the July 18 town board meeting.

Sister Loretta Adler will celebrate 50 years as a member of the School Sisters of St. Frances of Milwaukee on Sunday, Aug. 7.

Waunakee’s plan commission has given approval to move forward with 2 public hearings for Tax Incremental Finance Districts — one in the downtown and the other in the Waunakee business park.

Waunakee voters will get the chance to weigh on whether to spend $44.8 million to build one new school and renovate other facilities.

Waunakee plan commissioners gave a nod to two proposals — the Hovde Properties plan for the Koltes site and a new building for Little Strokes Swim Academy.
