Your letters: The mayor is just doing his job

Never wasting an opportunity to attack the private sector, former City of Wausau alderman Tom Kilian is at it again! I’m not quite sure … does his recent article, “Company claims it will launch Wausau water Into outer space. Really?” [sic] foretell a future standup comedy routine for Mr. Killian, or is he truly shocked that a company’s marketing department plays loose and fast with the truth about its products? One thing for sure, if his attempt was not at comedy, but a serious attempt at investigative journalism, Bernstein and Woodward’s jobs are certainly secure! But what gives? Mr. Kilian is a smart guy, albeit possessing Bolshevik tendencies, but Tom is truly a smart guy. Maybe he is putting in for the new position as Czar of “Business Vetting and Background Checks” soon to be created by Mayor Diny.

Humor aside, why is Mr. Kilian holding Mayor Diny, or any city employee for that matter, culpable for making initial contacts with prospective employers to Wausau without, as he calls it, “vetting.” But isn’t that a good thing? Isn’t that his job? However wacky Kilian believes this company to be, is the city committing any tax payer resources whatsoever? One trusts that Mr. Kilian isn’t implying that the Mayor has offered Wasa Water a “back door” deal, or is he? Sounds like he comes quite close to doing so. Be careful Tom. The Mayor is a public figure and has no recourse, but private companies are free to seek restitution from libelous statements and you sure bashed Wasa Water!

The point of the matter is that Wausau has no business vetting businesses choosing to locate here. It’s probably illegal! What’s next? Do we vet individual citizens that choose to buy a home and move here? Do they then have to pass Mr. Kilian’s gauntlet to have their water connected, — which they pay for?

My political leanings are transparent. I am not on social media but I have been told that I keep the Pilot’s Facebook page somewhat frothy. Mr. Kilian, as I mentioned, is a smart guy and equally transparent. Maybe his “animated” article was simply an opportunity to introduce the “progressive water rate structure” to Wausau and his fellow travelers.

Comrade Tom, that’s a debate for another day.

    Orlando Alfonso, Wausau
