Cleanup is underway after a train derailment west of Wausau, witnesses say.

Photos submitted to Wausau Pilot show several cars off the tracks next to a trestle over the Little Rib River in the town of Stettin. There’s no immediate word on injuries.

Marathon County Communications Coordinator Sarah Severson told Wausau Pilot the train was carrying non-hazardous roofing granules.

“This did occur in a wetland area, so they are consulting with the Wisconsin DNR to ensure the removal of the rail cars and product is done appropriately,” Severson said.

Unclear is the exact time of the incident and what caused the cars to shift from the tracks. The Fox Valley and Lake Superior Rail System is spearheading the cleanup effort.

Wausau Pilot will update this story as additional details are released.
