Plover eliminates Wausau from Class AAA Legion Baseball regional

WESTON – The Wausau Post 10 Legion baseball team was eliminated from the Class AAA regional, falling to Plover 7-3 on Friday afternoon at Simon Field at D.C. Everest High School.

Plover (24-13) moves on to a regional semifinal game against Marshfield (19-20) at 4 p.m. Saturday. The winner takes on Wisconsin Rapids (20-9) for the regional title, but also earns a spot in next week’s Wisconsin Class AAA State Legion Baseball Tournament at Wisconsin Rapids. Rapids, as the host, earns an automatic spot in the state field, so the runner-up of the regional also advances.

Wausau (15-23) led 2-0 after an RBI fielder’s choice grounder by Jackson Albee in the second inning and an RBI single by Jesse Osness in the fourth.

Plover struck for five runs in the top of the fifth as the first six batters of the inning had hits, with Kason Saeger knocking in the final two runs with a single.

After Wausau scored in the bottom of the frame on a Plover error, the Black Sox retaliated with two more runs. Two errors, and a hitter batter and walk with the bases loaded put Plover up 7-3.

The score held the rest of the way as Tim Sackmann finished off a complete game win for Plover, striking out five and allowing just four hits.
